A high-flying wrestler known for his daredevil antics and memorable feuds in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Marty Jannetty, born Fredrick Martin Jannetty on February 3, 1960, is a retired American professional wrestler best known for his iconic tag team partnership with Shawn Michaels as The Rockers. With a combined 20 championship wins across various promotions, Jannetty's wrestling career spanned multiple decades, earning him a reputation as a smooth and jaw-dropping performer.
Before venturing into professional wrestling, Jannetty was an amateur wrestler in Georgia, qualifying for the state championship tournament in his last three years of high school. He also dabbled in boxing, winning several Golden Gloves events during his high school days. After high school, he attended Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Alabama, where he was a two-time NJCAA qualifier.
Jannetty's most notable achievement came as half of The Rockers, a tag team he formed with Shawn Michaels in the late 1980s. Originally known as The Midnight Rockers, the duo captured two AWA World Tag Team Championships and various regional titles. Their success led to a WWF (now WWE) contract, where they became one of the top teams during the WWF's Golden Age, headlining multiple events. Although their WWF World Tag Team Championship reign was voided in 1990, The Rockers remain one of the most beloved and influential tag teams in wrestling history.
After splitting from Michaels in 1992, Jannetty went on to become a one-time WWF Intercontinental Champion and a one-time WWF World Tag Team Champion with the 123 Kid. He competed in multiple world championship matches between ECW and the WWF from 1995-1996, but his star began to fade thereafter. Personal issues and bouts of enhancement talent limited his success in WCW during the late 1990s. Jannetty made sporadic appearances for WWE during the 2000s, including a brief 2005 reunion with Michaels.
Despite being overshadowed by Michaels' later success, Jannetty's contributions to professional wrestling cannot be overlooked. Talksport described him as having a "dropkick to rival any," showcasing his impressive in-ring skills. His tag team partnership with Michaels helped shape the WWF's tag team division during the 1980s and 1990s. Although his career was marked by personal struggles and periods of dormancy, Marty Jannetty remains an important figure in the history of professional wrestling.
