Turco's hockey journey began in his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, where he played minor hockey for the S.S. Marie Legion program. Undrafted by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Turco signed with the Cambridge Winterhawks Jr. B team in 1992, later securing an NCAA scholarship to play college hockey for the University of Michigan. His four-year tenure at Michigan saw him win two NCAA championships, earn numerous awards, and receive multiple All-Star team nominations.
Drafted by the Dallas Stars in the fifth round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Turco began his professional journey with the Kalamazoo Wings, the Stars' International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate. He spent two years honing his skills, earning IHL Rookie of the Year honors in 1999. Turco's big break came in 2001, when he was called up to serve as Ed Belfour's backup in Dallas. After two seasons of tutelage, Turco became the Stars' starting goaltender, setting a modern NHL record with a 1.72 goals-against average in his inaugural season (2002-2003).
