Masahiro Chono, born on September 17, 1963, is an American-born Japanese professional wrestler and actor, renowned for his 26-year stint with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). As the leader of nWo Japan, Team 2000, and Black New Japan, Chono was the promotion's top heel for much of his career, adopting his yakuza-inspired gimmick in 1994.
Chono debuted in 1984, facing Keiji Mutoh at a NJPW event in Saitama, Japan. In 1987, he won the Young Lions Cup, defeating Shinya Hashimoto. Following his victory, Chono embarked on an excursion, wrestling in Europe and North America, before returning to NJPW part-time in July 1988.
During his time with NJPW, Chono held multiple championships, including the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship. He also holds the record for most wins of the G1 Climax with five victories, earning him the nicknames "Mr. August" and "Mr. G1."
