Matt Sorum is a name synonymous with rock music, having played drums for some of the most iconic bands in history, including Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver, and The Cult. With a career spanning over three decades, Sorum has left an indelible mark on the music industry, solidifying his reputation as one of the most sought-after drummers of all time.
Born on November 19, 1960, Sorum began his musical journey in the early 1980s, playing drums for various bands in the Los Angeles club circuit. His big break came in 1989 when he joined The Cult to tour in support of their fourth studio album, Sonic Temple. It was during this tour that Sorum caught the attention of Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, who would later recruit him to join the band.
In 1990, Sorum replaced drummer Steven Adler in Guns N' Roses, marking the beginning of a seven-year tenure that would see the band release some of their most iconic albums, including Use Your Illusion I and II, and The Spaghetti Incident. During this period, Sorum's drumming skills and energetic stage presence helped propel Guns N' Roses to international stardom.
In 1999, Sorum co-founded Velvet Revolver with former Guns N' Roses bandmates Slash and Duff McKagan. The band released two successful albums, Contraband and Libertad, before going on an extended hiatus. Sorum has since been involved in various projects, including Kings of Chaos, a touring project featuring an all-star lineup of rock musicians.
In addition to his work with various bands, Sorum has released two solo albums, Hollywood Zen in 2004 and Stratosphere in 2014. He has also been a permanent member of the hard rock cover band Camp Freddy since 2003. Sorum's latest project, Deadland Ritual, features Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens, and Apocalyptica vocalist Franky Perez.
Sorum has received numerous awards and nominations for his work, including a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song for Velvet Revolver's "Slither". He has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N' Roses.
