Todd's love affair with rugby began at the tender age of five, playing for the Kaiapoi Rugby Football Union. He attended Kaiapoi High School and later Christchurch Boys High School, where he honed his skills alongside future All Black teammates Colin Slade and Owen Franks, as well as former Crusader Nasi Manu and current Crusader Tim Bateman.
In 2009, Todd made his Air New Zealand Cup debut for Canterbury, rapidly becoming a mainstay in the team. His versatility and ability to play both blindside and openside flanker earned him a starting position in all of Canterbury's games in the 2010 NPC season. This impressive form led to his selection for the Crusaders in 2011, where he flourished under the guidance of Head Coach Todd Blackadder.
In 2013, Todd's outstanding performances in the absence of Richie McCaw earned him a call-up to the All Blacks. He went on to play 25 tests for New Zealand, scoring three tries and becoming the first overseas-based player to represent the All Blacks in 2018. Todd's last test match was during the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Following his retirement from playing, Todd transitioned seamlessly into coaching, taking on the role of assistant coach for the Crusaders. His wealth of experience and innate understanding of the game have proven invaluable to the team, helping to shape the next generation of rugby stars.
