Born on October 17, 1974, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, Macfadyen is the son of Meinir Owen, a drama teacher and former actress, and Martin Macfadyen, an oil engineer. His paternal grandparents were Scottish, and his maternal grandparents were Welsh. Growing up, Macfadyen lived in various places, including Jakarta, Indonesia, due to his father's occupation, attending schools in England, Scotland, and Indonesia. He attended Oakham School in Rutland before being accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) at the age of 17.
Macfadyen made his television debut in 1998 as Hareton Earnshaw in the ITV adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights.
