A Swedish singer-songwriter known for his poetic lyrics and soothing indie-folk melodies, often compared to artists like Elliott Smith and Nick Drake.
Mattias Hellberg, born on June 13, 1973, is a renowned Swedish musician known for his versatility and contributions to various genres of music. With a career spanning over two decades, Hellberg has worked with numerous Swedish bands and artists, both as a permanent member and as a guest or session member, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.
Hellberg's music career took off when his band, Nymphet Noodlers, was discovered and later produced by Ebbot from The Soundtrack of Our Lives. This led to a significant breakthrough, with Wayne Kramer of the MC5 declaring Nymphet Noodlers as one of his favorite bands. Although the band disbanded in 1996, it was reunited for a one-off concert at Way Out West in August 2011.
In 1996, Hellberg and his former Nymphet colleague, Hederos, recorded eight cover songs, which were initially meant to be a demo to get gigs in bars. However, old friend Niclas Stenholm released the songs on the album M. Hederos M. Hellberg in 2000, which unexpectedly became a huge success. This led to Ryan Adams discovering the duo and bringing them on a European tour. Hellberg's subsequent collaborations with Nick Royale, Scott Morgan's soul band The Solution, and guitarist Robert Dahlqvist's solo effort Thunder Express further cemented his reputation as a talented musician.
In the 1990s, Hellberg was brought on board as the new vocalist for the legendary Swedish prog band Nationalteatern. He also performed live with the band's former vocalist, Totta Näslund, as a backup due to Näslund's health problems.
In 2004, Hellberg worked with singer-songwriter Stefan Sundström on his album Fula gubben Hitler, and also went on tour to support the album. Additionally, he was part of the band Kanzeon, which released a self-titled album in 2007 featuring a number of guest vocalists.
Mattias Hellberg's contributions to the music industry are a testament to his incredible talent and versatility. With a career spanning over two decades, he has left an indelible mark on the Swedish music scene, inspiring countless musicians and fans alike.
