Renowned for his innovative and expressive approach to ballet, Maurice Bjart was a French-born dancer, choreographer, and opera director who left an indelible mark on the world of modern dance.
Born Maurice Jean Berger on January 1, 1927, in Marseille, France, Bjart was the son of French philosopher Gaston Berger. His fascination with dance began at an early age, inspired by a recital of Serge Lifar. He went on to study dance under esteemed teachers, including Mathilde Kschessinska, Madam Rousanne Sarkissian, Lo Staats, and Olga Preobrajenska.
In 1948, Bjart trained with Janine Charrat, Yvette Chauvir, and Roland Petit, further refining his craft. His talent and dedication soon led him to become a corps de ballet at the Opra de Marseille in 1945. The following year, he founded the Ballet de l'toile company, which although short-lived, marked the beginning of his illustrious career as a choreographer.
In 1960, Bjart founded the Ballet du XXe Siècle in Brussels, a company that would become his artistic home for over two decades. During this period, he premiered several groundbreaking works, including Golestan (1973), Improvisation sur Mallarmé III (1973), and Farah (1976), all of which showcased his unique blend of modern ballet and cultural influences.
In 1987, Bjart relocated to Lausanne, Switzerland, where he established the Bjart Ballet Lausanne. This new chapter in his career was marked by continued innovation and creativity, as he went on to create numerous ballets, including a critically acclaimed version of The Nutcracker.
Throughout his career, Bjart received numerous honors and accolades for his contributions to dance. He was posthumously awarded Swiss citizenship in recognition of his artistic achievements. Today, his legacy continues to inspire new generations of dancers, choreographers, and dance enthusiasts around the world.
November 22, 2007, marked the passing of Maurice Bjart, but his artistic vision and contributions continue to shape the world of dance.
