Born on 17 March 1941, in Cambridge, England, StaffordClark was the son of David StaffordClark, a physician, and Dorothy Crossley (née Oldfield). He was educated at Felsted School, in Essex, England, and Riverdale Country School in New York City, followed by Trinity College, Dublin.
StaffordClark's directing career began as Associate Director of the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in 1966. He became artistic director there from 1968 to 1970 and later directed the Traverse Theatre Workshop Company from 1970 to 1974. During this period, he co-founded the Joint Stock Theatre Company in 1974, which revolutionized the way playwrights worked with actors and directors.
This innovative approach involved using company research to inspire workshops, which in turn inspired writers to create new material. This methodology, now known as The Joint Stock Method, has been widely adopted in the theatre world.
From 1979 to 1993, StaffordClark was the longest-serving Artistic Director of the Royal Court Theatre. During his tenure, he nurtured emerging playwrights, including Andrea Dunbar, Hanif Kureishi, Sarah Daniels, and Jim Cartwright. His regular collaborators on productions included the singer Ian Dury.
