Born on April 6, 1983, in Morocco, Ballouchy began his footballing journey at the tender age of 13, joining SCC Mohammdia. He spent three years honing his skills before moving to the United States in 2000. Initially, he lived with his brother in Denver before attending Gunn High School in Palo Alto, California, with a host family.
Ballouchy's talent did not go unnoticed, as he attended college and played one year of college soccer at Creighton and two at Santa Clara. His impressive performances earned him a first-team All-American selection in 2005. He also briefly played with Boulder Rapids Reserve in the USL Premier Development League, further refining his skills.
In 2006, Ballouchy signed a Generation Adidas contract with MLS and was drafted second overall by Real Salt Lake in the MLS SuperDraft. During his two-year stint with RSL, he appeared in 46 league matches, scoring 2 goals and recording 2 assists.
In July 2007, Ballouchy was traded to Colorado Rapids in exchange for Kyle Beckerman. He flourished as an attacking central midfielder, also featuring at right midfield. With Colorado, he made 77 league appearances, scoring 7 goals and providing 18 assists. His most productive season was in 2009, when he appeared in 28 league matches, scoring 2 goals and recording 7 assists.
On September 14, 2010, Ballouchy joined New York Red Bulls in a trade for Macoumba Kandji. He made his debut on September 16, 2010, scoring a goal in a 2-2 draw against FC Dallas. Ballouchy's performances were instrumental in the Red Bulls' 2-0 victory over New England Revolution on October 21, 2010.
