A Hall of Fame defensive tackle turned charismatic sportscaster and actor, known for his rugged gridiron persona and iconic mustache. He's a beloved figure in American sports and entertainment.
Merlin Olsen is best known for his dominant 15-year career as a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL), earning 14 Pro Bowl selections and a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But Olsen's impact extended far beyond the gridiron, as he also made a name for himself as a talented actor, starring in popular television shows such as Little House on the Prairie and Father Murphy.
Born on September 15, 1940, in Logan, Utah, Olsen was the second of nine siblings and the firstborn son to Merle Barrus and Lynn Jay Olsen. His parents, both graduates of Utah State University, instilled in him a strong work ethic and a passion for athletics. Despite being cut from his high school basketball team, Olsen persevered and went on to play football for Utah State, where he earned the Outland Trophy in 1961 as the best lineman in college football.
Olsen's impressive college career caught the attention of the Los Angeles Rams, who drafted him in 1962. Over the course of his 15-year career, Olsen became a mainstay of the Rams' defense, earning 14 Pro Bowl selections and helping the team win several division titles. His impressive performance on the field earned him a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1980.
After retiring from football in 1979, Olsen turned his attention to acting, landing the role of farmer Jonathan Garvey on the popular television show Little House on the Prairie. His success on the show led to a starring role in his own NBC drama, Father Murphy, which aired from 1981 to 1983. Olsen's acting career spanned over two decades, during which he appeared in numerous television shows and films.
Olsen was known for his kind heart and generosity, often hosting and supporting charitable events throughout his career. He was married to his wife, Susan, for over 40 years until his passing on March 11, 2010. Olsen's legacy extends beyond his impressive football career and acting accomplishments, inspiring generations of athletes and actors to pursue their passions with dedication and perseverance.
