Born on November 18, 1983, in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, Dawson grew up in Leyburn and attended Wensleydale school. He is the younger brother of fellow footballers Andy Dawson and Kevin Dawson. Dawson's passion for football began at a young age, playing for local teams Northallerton Juniors and Richmond before signing as a junior professional with Nottingham Forest at the age of 14.
Dawson turned professional in November 2000 and made his first-team debut for Forest on April 1, 2002, against Walsall in a 3-2 home defeat. During the 2002-2003 season, Dawson established himself in the team alongside veteran defender Des Walker, as Forest finished sixth in the First Division to enter the playoffs.
