After completing his national service in Malaysia, Deeley secured a job as an assistant editor at a company run by Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. through his mother's connections.
During this period, Deeley met his editing partner, Harry Booth, and together they decided to venture into producing. They raised funds to produce a 26-minute short, The Case of the Mukkinese Battle Horn (1956), starring Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan. This debut production marked the beginning of Deeley's prolific career as a film producer.
In the early 1960s, Deeley worked for the UK sales arm of MCA Universal, but soon returned to producing with Sandy the Reluctant Nudist (1963) and One Way Pendulum (1964). His breakthrough came with Robbery (1967), which led to a partnership with Stanley Baker to form Oakhurst Productions.
This partnership resulted in a series of companies, including Great Western Festivals, Great Western Investments, and eventually, the acquisition of British Lion Films in 1973. As managing director of British Lion, Deeley oversaw the release of critically acclaimed films like Dont Look Now (1973) and The Wicker Man (1973).
