Following a short stay in South Bend, Indiana, Gira relocated with his father to Germany, where he continued to struggle with authority.

It was during this period that he was arrested and spent four and a half months in an adult jail in Jerusalem for selling hashish. Upon his release, Gira returned to California, where he worked at a bakery on Redondo Beach Pier, completed his GED, and eventually attended Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
In 1979, Gira moved to New York, where he joined the band Circus Mort before forming Swans in 1982. Initially, Swans was known for their raw, abrasive sound, eschewing melody for visceral power. This early period of Swans was marked by a DIY ethos, with Gira and his collaborators creating music that was both challenging and cathartic.
