Michael Stephen Palmer was born on October 9, 1943, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Milton and May Palmer. He grew up with two younger sisters, Donna and Susan. Palmer graduated from Wesleyan University in 1964 with a premed major and a Russian minor. He then attended Case Western Reserve University for medical school, later training in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Palmer never intended to become a writer. In fact, he once claimed he didn't think he had the flair for it, despite being an avid reader. However, after reading Robin Cook's medical thriller "Coma" in 1978, Palmer was inspired to give writing a try. He figured that if Cook, also a Wesleyan graduate, could write a novel, then he could too.
Palmer's debut novel, "The Sisterhood" (1982), tackled the sensitive topic of euthanasia, while his second published work, "Side Effects" (1985), explored the testing of unapproved drugs on patients in Nazi Germany. However, it was his third novel, "Extreme Measures" (1991), that catapulted him to fame. The book's success can be attributed to its gripping storyline about a young doctor who uncovers a hospital elite's criminal acts.
