A Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and producer blending R&B, pop, and rock to create soulful, introspective music. Known for his smooth vocals and genre-bending style.
PJ Morton, born Paul Sylvester Morton Jr., is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer, best known as the keyboardist for the pop band Maroon 5 since 2012. As a talented artist, Morton has also made a name for himself as a solo artist, releasing several albums and EPs that showcase his soulful voice and genre-bending style.
Born on March 29, 1981, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Morton grew up in a musical family. His father, Bishop Paul S. Morton, is a Canadian-born American gospel singer and founder of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, while his mother, Dr. Debra Brown Morton, is the pastor of Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church. Morton graduated from St. Augustine High School and went on to major in marketing at Morehouse College, where he graduated in 2003.
In 2010, Morton's friend and Maroon 5's musical director, Adam Blackstone, asked him to audition for a position in the band as a touring keyboardist and backing vocalist. Morton was the first to audition and left a lasting impression on the group. He became an official member of Maroon 5 in 2012, replacing Jesse Carmichael, who went on indefinite hiatus. During his time with the band, Morton has toured extensively and contributed to several albums, including Overexposed, V, and Red Pill Blues.
In addition to his work with Maroon 5, Morton has released several solo projects, including his debut EP, Following My First Mind, in 2012, and his first major-label debut album, New Orleans, in 2013. His subsequent releases include the mixtape Bounce & Soul Vol. 1 in 2016, the EP Sticking to My Guns in 2016, and the studio album Gumbo in 2017, which earned him two Grammy Award nominations.
In 2019, Morton announced a project to restore the New Orleans home of jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden and create a museum and community space at the site. Bolden's former home had been owned by Morton's father's church for over a decade and had been cited for demolition by neglect. This project is a testament to Morton's commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of his hometown.
As a member of Maroon 5 and a solo artist, PJ Morton has left an indelible mark on the music industry. His soulful voice, genre-bending style, and commitment to philanthropy have inspired a new generation of musicians and fans alike. With a career spanning over a decade, Morton continues to push the boundaries of R&B and soul music, solidifying his place as one of the most talented and influential artists of our time.
