Jones won an Open Exhibition in English to Jesus College, Oxford, although he did not graduate, opting instead to pursue a career in music.
In the early 1960s, Jones began singing in various blues clubs, performing duets with Elmo Lewis, who later became Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. He was asked by Keith Richards and Brian Jones to be the lead singer of a group they were forming, but he turned them down. Instead, he joined Manfred Mann's blues band, The Mann-Hugg Blues Band, as the vocalist and harmonica player.
With Manfred Mann, Jones achieved tremendous success, scoring two UK number one hits, "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" (1964) and "Pretty Flamingo" (1965).
