Phil Bruns was an American television and movie actor, as well as a writer, best known for his memorable portrayals of George Shumway, the lovable father of Mary Hartman in the 1970s comedic series Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and Morty Seinfeld, the father of Jerry Seinfeld, in the hit sitcom Seinfeld.
Born on May 2, 1931, on a farm near Pipestone, Minnesota, Bruns was the youngest of three children to Margie Evelyn Solon (née Trigg) and Henry Phillip Bruns. His ancestry was German and Irish. He developed a passion for football and played high school football.
After completing his high school education, Bruns graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Augustana College in South Dakota. He further pursued his passion for acting by earning a Master's Degree from the esteemed Yale School of Drama in New Haven, Connecticut. Additionally, he studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in London, England.
Bruns appeared in numerous films, TV commercials, and on- and off-Broadway plays throughout his career. He won an Obie Award for his role as Mr. Simian in the 1963-1964 season. One of his notable performances was as the Warlock in Werner Liepolts The Young Master Dante at The American Place Theater in 1968.
