After high school, Dawson attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a four-year letterman in football. Redshirting his freshman year, Dawson scored 80 points in his first year of playing, tying a school record with 54 consecutive extra points. He made honorary All-American honors in his sophomore year, leading the Longhorns in scoring, and eventually earned first-team All-American honors during his junior and senior years, while simultaneously making All-Big 12.
Dawson's success didn't stop there. He went on to play for the San Francisco 49ers from 2013 to 2016 and the Arizona Cardinals in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, he signed a contract to retire as a member of the Browns, bringing an end to his illustrious career.
