Phil Simms, born on November 3, 1955, is an American former football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons with the New York Giants. He is best known for leading the Giants to a 39-20 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI, where he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and set multiple records that still stand today.
Simms was born on his grandfather's farm in Springfield, Kentucky, and later moved to Louisville with his family. He attended St. Rita Catholic grade school and Southern High School, where he was the quarterback of the Trojans. After high school, Simms chose to attend Morehead State University, a NCAA Division I FCS school, where he played for the Eagles and graduated in 1979.
Simms was selected by the New York Giants as the seventh overall pick in the 1979 NFL Draft. He played for the Giants from 1979 to 1993, leading the team to several victories, including two Super Bowl appearances. In addition to his Super Bowl XXI MVP performance, Simms was named to the Pro Bowl twice, in 1985 and 1993, and finished his career with 33,462 passing yards.
After retiring from football, Simms went on to become a successful broadcaster of NFL games. He started his broadcasting career as an analyst for ESPN, then moved to NBC as an in-game color commentator, and later joined CBS, where he worked until 2024.
Simms is the father of two sons, Chris Simms and Matt Simms, who both played in the NFL. Chris is currently an NFL football analyst, while Matt played as a quarterback.
