Philipp Grubauer is a German professional ice hockey goaltender who has made a name for himself in the National Hockey League (NHL) with his exceptional skills and achievements. As a member of the Seattle Kraken, Grubauer has become the first German-born goaltender to start and win a Stanley Cup playoff game, and later, the first Kraken goaltender to record a shutout.
Born on November 25, 1991, in Rosenheim, Germany, Grubauer began his hockey career at a young age. He played for his hometown's junior team, Starbulls Rosenheim, starting in 2004 at the age of 13. Grubauer's debut with the Starbulls senior club came on February 17, 2008, when he was just 16 years old, in a 2-0 shutout victory.
In 2010, Grubauer was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (112th overall) of the NHL Entry Draft. He went on to play major junior hockey, winning the Memorial Cup with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 2010. Grubauer started his professional career with the Capitals the next season.
In April 2015, Grubauer became the first German-born goaltender to start and win a Stanley Cup playoff game while playing for the Capitals. He won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Capitals in 2018. After three seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, Grubauer signed with the Seattle Kraken. In February 2022, he became the first Kraken goaltender to record a shutout.
Grubauer has represented Germany in various international competitions, including the World U17 Hockey Challenge, IIHF World U18 Championship, and World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He helped Germany return to the Top Division in 2010 and has participated in five senior World Championships (2014, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2024). Grubauer also competed in the qualification round for the 2018 Winter Olympics, helping Germany secure a spot.
Throughout his career, Grubauer has achieved numerous personal milestones and awards. He was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2013-14 and has played in over 300 NHL games.
