Pierre Moerlen was a French drummer and percussionist, best known for his groundbreaking work with Gong, Mike Oldfield, and Pierre Moerlen's Gong. With a career spanning over three decades, Moerlen's innovative approach to percussion and rhythm left an indelible mark on the world of progressive rock and beyond.
Born on 23 October 1952 in Colmar, Haut-Rhin, Moerlen was the third of five children. His father was an organist, and his mother was a music teacher, instilling in him a love for music from a young age. All five siblings learned music with their parents, and all became musicians.
In January 1973, Moerlen joined Daevid Allen's Gong, debuting on the critically acclaimed album Angels Egg. Shortly after, in June 1973, he was asked by Virgin Records' boss Richard Branson to play percussion with Mike Oldfield for the premiere of Tubular Bells, replacing the incapacitated Robert Wyatt.
Between 1975 and 1987, Moerlen would become Oldfield's percussionist of choice for his albums and tours. Notable collaborations include Ommadawn (1975), Incantations (1978), and Quran (1983). Moerlen also returned to Gong, co-leading the band with Didier Malherbe and Steve Hillage, and recorded several albums with Pierre Moerlen's Gong.
Moerlen's innovative approach to percussion and rhythm has influenced a generation of musicians. His work with Gong and Mike Oldfield is widely regarded as some of the most groundbreaking in progressive rock. His legacy continues to inspire and influence musicians across multiple genres.
Moerlen's younger brother, Benoît Moerlen, is also a percussionist and worked with Gong and Mike Oldfield. Moerlen was known for his warm and humble nature, often lending his talents to charitable causes and collaborations.
Pierre Moerlen passed away on 3 May 2005 in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, near Strasbourg, leaving behind a legacy of innovative music and a profound impact on the world of progressive rock.
