R. R. Patil, popularly known as Aaba, was a stalwart Indian politician who left an indelible mark on the state of Maharashtra. As a member of the Nationalist Congress Party, he held various key positions in the government, including Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister, shaping the state's political landscape.
Patil was born on 16 August 1957 in the village of Anjani, Tasgaon taluka, Sangli district, Maharashtra. Despite his father being the village head, the family struggled financially. He completed his education under the government's Earn and Learn scheme, obtaining a B.A. and LL.B. from Shantiniketan College in Sangli.
Patil's political journey began in 1979 as a member of the Sangli Zillah Parishad from Savlaj constituency. He was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1990, 1995, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014, representing Tasgaon, Sangli district. He became the Chief Whip of the Congress Party in the assembly and the chairman of the public accounts committee of the assembly in 1996-1997 and 1998-1999.
In October 1999, Patil became the Rural Development Minister of Maharashtra in the Congress-NCP coalition government. He later took charge of the Home Ministry in December 2003, and on November 1, 2004, he was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
As Home Minister, Patil took bold steps to combat naxalism in the state. He sought guardianship of naxal-affected districts, including Gadchiroli, and implemented development projects to win the support of the locals. Despite facing multiple naxal attacks, Patil's initiatives led to a significant decline in naxal activity in the region.
Patil's politics was guided by a strong sense of social justice and equality. He believed in empowering the marginalized and oppressed sections of society, and his governance reflected this philosophy.
