Sandin began the 2018-2019 season with the Toronto Marlies, the Toronto Maple Leafs' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. During the season, he set a new team record for the longest point streak by a defenceman. He finished the 2018-2019 season with six goals and 28 points in 44 regular season games.

Sandin played his first NHL game against the Ottawa Senators on October 2, 2019, recording one assist in a 5-3 win. He eventually recorded his first career NHL goal on January 27, 2020, in a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators.

Transfer to Washington Capitals

During the 2022-2023 season, approaching the NHL trade deadline, Sandin was dealt by the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Erik Gustafsson and a 2023 first-round draft pick.
