Linn attended Heritage Hall School and later Casady School, an independent school affiliated with the Episcopal Church. He also spent time working part-time at the Oklahoma City Zoo.

He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1980 and went on to work in the banking industry, rising to the position of Vice President of Energy Lending for the Lakeshore Bank.
