Born on January 12, 1947, in Cardiff, Wales, Carwardine's intellectual curiosity was nurtured from a young age. He attended Maesycwmmer Primary School and Monmouth School, before being awarded a William Jones Exhibitioner to study modern history at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He graduated with a BA in 1968 and later earned an MA in 1972.
