A towering figure with a distinctive voice, best known for playing iconic villains and characters in popular TV shows and films, including the beloved sitcom "Night Court".
Richard Moll, an American actor born on January 13, 1943, is perhaps best known for his iconic role as Aristotle Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon, a bailiff on the NBC sitcom Night Court from 1984 to 1992. His deep, resonant voice and towering presence at 6 feet 8 inches tall made him an unforgettable on-screen presence.
Moll was born in Pasadena, California, to Violet Anita (née Grill), a nurse, and Harry Findley Moll, a lawyer. Growing up, he was an imposing figure, reaching 6 feet 1 inch by the age of 12. He spent summer vacations visiting Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with his family. Moll attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and performed in works of William Shakespeare.
Moll's early career saw him appear in various film and television roles, often playing hulking or imposing characters. Notable roles include Joseph Smith in the 1977 film Brigham, Eugene, a gangster on Happy Days in 1979, and the abominable snowman in the 1981 comedy feature film Caveman.
In 1981, he costarred with Jan-Michael Vincent and Kim Basinger in the film Hard Country. The same year, he had a small part in the Mork & Mindy episode "Alienation," where he appeared alongside future fellow Night Court cast member John Larroquette.
In 1982, Moll played the sorcerer Xusia in The Sword and the Sorcerer. The following year, he shaved his head for the role of Hurok in the science fiction B movie Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn. The producers of Night Court loved the look so much that they asked him to keep it for his audition, which eventually led to his iconic role as Bull Shannon.
Richard Moll's portrayal of Bull Shannon on Night Court earned him a permanent place in the hearts of television audiences. His character's dry wit, gentle giant persona, and deadpan delivery made him a beloved fixture on the show.
In addition to his work on Night Court, Moll's voice work as Harvey Dent/Two-Face in the DC Animated Universe series Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures further cemented his status as a versatile actor.
Throughout his career, Moll worked alongside some of the most talented actors and actresses in the industry, leaving behind a legacy as a consummate professional and a master of his craft.
Richard Moll's views on life and the entertainment industry were shaped by his experiences as a tall, imposing figure in a world where he often didn't fit in. In interviews, he spoke about the importance of embracing one's uniqueness and finding comfort in being different.
In his own words, "I've always been the guy who stuck out like a sore thumb. But instead of trying to hide it, I decided to make it work for me."
Richard Moll passed away on October 26, 2023, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved actor and a devoted husband, father, and friend.
Throughout his life, Moll remained humble and kind, using his platform to support charitable causes and inspire future generations of actors and actresses.
In the words of his Night Court costar, Markie Post, "Richard was a gentle giant with a heart of gold. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on through his incredible body of work."
