Richard Sterban, born on April 24, 1943, is the bass singer extraordinaire behind the iconic country and gospel quartet, The Oak Ridge Boys. His signature oompah-pa-pa-mow-mow bass solo in their 1981 hit single "Elvira" has become an unmistakable hallmark of the group's sound.
Sterban grew up in Collingswood, New Jersey, and graduated from Collingswood High School. He attended Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) before embarking on a music career that would take him to the heights of country and gospel music.
Prior to joining The Oak Ridge Boys, Sterban toured with J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, who were singing backup for Elvis Presley at the time. This experience laid the foundation for his later success with the Oak Ridge Boys.
Sterban's powerful bass voice and energetic stage presence quickly made him an integral part of The Oak Ridge Boys. In addition to his signature solo on "Elvira," he also sang lead vocals on select tracks, including a cover of The Righteous Brothers' hit "Dream On," which became a top-ten hit.
Beyond his music career, Sterban has lent his voice to various philanthropic causes. He recorded public service announcements for NOAA Weather Radio and served as the voice of The Roadhouse, a classic country channel on Sirius Satellite Radio.
In addition to his music and philanthropy, Sterban was a minority owner of the Nashville Sounds minor league baseball team from 1978 to 2008, alongside entrepreneurs and country music stars, including Conway Twitty, Larry Gatlin, and Cal Smith.
Sterban's contributions to country and gospel music were recognized in 2015 when he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as a member of The Oak Ridge Boys.
In 2023, Sterban took a brief hiatus from the group's tours, with Aaron McCune, bass vocalist for Dailey & Vincent, serving as his fill-in. However, the issues that led to his absence were later resolved, and he returned to the group.
