His father, Clarence Jones, was a professional baseball player who played for the Nankai Hawks in Osaka. Jones has an older brother, Clarence Jones Jr., who is a high school basketball coach. He attended Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California, and later graduated from Tuskegee University.
Jones' career in television began in the early 1990s, with his first role in a 1993 episode of California Dreams. He gained recognition for his portrayal of Ike Turner Jr. in the 1993 biographical drama What's Love Got to Do with It.
