Kemp's rise to prominence began in the 1960s when he worked with singer-songwriter Michael Chapman, earning a reputation as a rock and blues session bassist within the music industry. This laid the foundation for his transition into British folk rock, which would become his defining genre.
In 1972, Kemp joined Steeleye Span, a band that would become synonymous with his name. During his initial stint with the band, which lasted until 1986, Kemp played a pivotal role in shaping their distinctive sound. In 2007, he co-founded The Gathering, later known as Gathering Britannia, alongside Morter, Donahue, Kristina Donahue, Ray Jackson, and Clive Bunker. The band released one album, The Bridge, in 2011.
In 1979, Kemp co-founded the record label Plant Life with Steeleye Span drummer Nigel Pegrum. Although the label was discontinued in 1984, it served as a platform for Kemp to nurture emerging talent.

His debut solo album, Escape, was released in 1996, followed by Spies in 1998, in 2004, Fanfare in 2009, and Perfect Blue in 2018.
