A British rock bassist who played with iconic bands like Tina Turner and Eric Clapton, known for his dynamic stage presence and melodic bass lines.
Rick Price, born Richard Gordon Price on June 10, 1944, was an English bassist who left an indelible mark on the British rock scene. With a career spanning over four decades, he played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of iconic bands like the Move and Wizzard, and collaborated with legendary musicians such as Roy Wood and Carl Wayne.
Price's fascination with music began in 1957, when he picked up the guitar for a school play at Colmers Farm Secondary School. Although he briefly abandoned the instrument, his interest was reignited by 1960, prompted by the realization that girls liked boys in groups. This epiphany led him to form his first band, the Cimarrons, which drew inspiration from the Shadows. The Sombreros, a subsequent band, would eventually evolve into Sight and Sound, marking Price's foray into the psychedelic rock realm.
In 1969, Price joined the Move, replacing Trevor Burton, and stayed with the group for two years, including an ill-fated tour of the United States. When the Move disbanded, they reemerged as Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), with Price contributing bass tracks to their debut album's early sessions. Although his parts didn't make the final cut, this experience laid the groundwork for his future collaborations.
After leaving the Move, Price signed with Gemini Records and recorded an album, This Is To Certify That, with Mike Sheridan in 1970. He released his solo album, Talking To The Flowers, in 1971. A subsequent stint with Carl Wayne in Light Fantastic preceded his formation of Mongrel, featuring future Wizzard drummers Charlie Grima and Keith Smart.
Price's most notable achievement came when he joined Roy Wood in Wizzard, producing two British number one hit singles, "See My Baby Jive" and "Angel Fingers," as well as the timeless Christmas classic "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" (all released in 1973). These hits cemented Price's status as a rock legend, and his work with Wizzard remains some of the most iconic in British rock history.
Rick Price's contributions to British rock have left an enduring legacy. His work with the Move, Wizzard, and other notable bands has influenced generations of musicians. Price's bass lines continue to reverberate through the fabric of rock music, ensuring his place among the pantheon of British rock royalty.
Rick Price's remarkable career serves as a testament to his passion, dedication, and innovative spirit. His impact on British rock will continue to be felt for generations to come.
