A Dutch musician and songwriter, best known for writing and performing the hit songs "Venus" and " Radar Love" with the rock band Shocking Blue.
Robbie van Leeuwen is a name synonymous with Dutch music, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. As the guitarist, sitarist, background vocalist, and primary songwriter for bands like The Motions and Shocking Blue, van Leeuwen left an indelible mark on the music industry, crafting hits that continue to reverberate to this day.
In 1970, Shocking Blue released the single "Venus," which shot to the top of the charts in both the US and UK, becoming a No. 1 hit. This iconic song, penned by van Leeuwen, has since been covered by Bananarama and remains one of the most recognizable tunes of the era. Other notable compositions by van Leeuwen during this period include "Love Buzz" (which Nirvana would later cover as their debut single) and "Daemon Lover."
In 1974, van Leeuwen parted ways with Shocking Blue and formed Galaxy Lin, releasing the successful single "Long Hot Summer." With Galaxy Lin, he crafted two albums, Galaxy Lin (1974) and G (1975), before the band disbanded in 1976. The singer, Rudy Bennett, had previously collaborated with van Leeuwen in The Motions.
In 1977, van Leeuwen co-founded Mistral with Rick van der Linden, producing three hits: "Jamie," "Starship 109," and "Neon City." The group's sound was heavily influenced by the synthesizer. Although Mistral released three more singles in 1980, they failed to replicate the same level of success.
In 1984, van Leeuwen released two more singles under the moniker Cats Eye. Apart from producing two singles for former Shocking Blue singer Mariska Veres, van Leeuwen largely stepped back from the music industry, relocating to Luxembourg.
As of 2023, van Leeuwen remains the sole surviving member of Shocking Blue's most well-known four-piece lineup. His contributions to the music world are undeniable, with a legacy that continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
Robbie van Leeuwen's impact on the music industry is a testament to his innovative spirit, creativity, and dedication to his craft. As a musician, songwriter, and trailblazer, he leaves behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire and entertain for years to come.
