As the bassist and core songwriter of the iconic rock band Stone Temple Pilots, Robert DeLeo has made an indelible mark on the music industry. With his distinctive playing style and knack for crafting infectious hooks, DeLeo has been instrumental in shaping the sound of one of the most successful bands of the 1990s.
Born on February 2, 1966, in Montclair, New Jersey, DeLeo grew up in a musical family alongside his older brother Dean, who would later become the guitarist of Stone Temple Pilots. The brothers were raised in the Jersey Shore community of Point Pleasant Beach and graduated from Point Pleasant Borough High School in 1984.
Their early life was filled with music, and DeLeo's older half-brother, actor Scott Marlowe, was also a significant influence. After high school, DeLeo set his sights on a music career, and it wasn't long before he met Scott Weiland, who would become the lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots.
The chance encounter between DeLeo and Weiland at a Black Flag concert in Long Beach led to the formation of Stone Temple Pilots. Alongside drummer Eric Kretz, the band started performing in Los Angeles bars, eventually catching the attention of Atlantic Records in 1992.
With DeLeo's creative input, the band's unique sound began to take shape. He is credited with writing some of the band's most iconic songs, including the intros to "Plush" and "Interstate Love Song." During the 1990s, Stone Temple Pilots became one of the most successful bands of the decade, selling over 30 million records worldwide.
After Stone Temple Pilots disbanded in 2003 due to Weiland's struggles with drug addiction, DeLeo went on to form the band Army of Anyone with Richard Patrick (Filter) and Ray Luzier (Korn). He also joined the supergroup Hollywood Vampires, alongside Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp.
In 2015, DeLeo teamed up with Phil Collen (Def Leppard) and drummer Forrest Robinson to form the band Delta Deep, which debuted with a self-titled album.
DeLeo's contributions to Stone Temple Pilots have had a lasting impact on the music industry. His songwriting skills and distinctive bass playing style have influenced countless musicians, and the band's music remains a staple of 1990s rock radio.
With a career spanning over three decades, DeLeo's legacy continues to inspire new generations of music fans and artists alike.
DeLeo is known for his humility and down-to-earth personality, often crediting his bandmates and collaborators for his success. He is also an avid surfer and has been involved in various charitable initiatives, including supporting organizations that aid victims of addiction.
As a testament to his enduring talent and dedication to his craft, Robert DeLeo remains an integral part of the music world, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of fans everywhere.
