Born on October 11, 1937, in Manhattan, Leibman was the son of a Russian Jewish immigrant and a mother of Russian Jewish descent. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University, he began his career in the late 1950s as a member of the Compass Players, an improvisational theater group. He was soon admitted to the prestigious Actors Studio, where he honed his craft alongside some of the greatest actors of his time.
Leibman made his film debut in 1970 alongside George Segal in the dark comedy Wheres Poppa. He went on to appear in a range of films, including The Hot Rock (1972), Norma Rae (1979), and Zorro, The Gay Blade (1982). In addition to his film work, Leibman also had a successful television career, starring in the short-lived crime drama series Kaz, for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1979.
In the latter part of his career, Leibman became widely known for his recurring role as Dr. Leonard Green on the hit sitcom Friends (1996-2004) and for providing the voice of Ron Cadillac on the animated series Archer (2013-2021).
