In 1982, Dio left Black Sabbath to form his own band, Dio, which released several successful albums, including Holy Diver (1983) and The Last in Line (1984). Two of the band's albums were certified platinum by the RIAA.
In 2006, Dio founded the band Heaven and Hell with former Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi. The band released The Devil You Know in 2009, before Dio's untimely passing on May 16, 2010, after a six-month battle with stomach cancer.
