A skilled Norwegian defender who played for top clubs like Manchester United and won several titles, including the Champions League.
Ronny Johnsen is best known for his integral role in Manchester United's historic Treble-winning season in 1999, where the team claimed the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League titles. As a centreback, Johnsen's tenacity, vision, and skill on the pitch were instrumental in the Red Devils' success during his five-year stint at the club.
Born on June 10, 1969, in Sandefjord, Norway, Johnsen began his footballing journey in the lower divisions of Norwegian football, playing for Sem IF, Stokke IL, Eik-Tønsberg, and Lyn. He initially played as a striker but was later retrained as a centreback by head coach Nils Johan Semb.
In 1996, Johnsen made the leap to Manchester United, becoming the then most expensive Norwegian defender with a transfer fee of £1.2 million. He signed a five-year contract with the club and went on to win four league titles, one FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999.
Johnsen earned 62 caps for Norway, representing his country at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He also won the Norwegian league title with Vålerenga in 2002.
"Ronny was a top player, a great professional, and a terrific guy. He was an important part of our Treble-winning team." - Sir Alex Ferguson
After retiring from professional football, Johnsen went on to pursue a career in coaching and punditry. He has been involved in various charitable initiatives, including working with the Manchester United Foundation to promote grassroots football and support local communities.
Ronny Johnsen's contributions to Manchester United's Treble-winning season cemented his place in the club's history. While he may not be as widely recognized as some of his teammates, Johnsen's influence on the team's success during that era cannot be overstated. As a testament to his dedication, tenacity, and skill, Johnsen remains an unsung hero of Manchester United's greatest era.
