After serving in the US Army from 1945 to 1946, Andru attended the Cartoonists and Illustrators School, studying under Burne Hogarth. During this period, he also worked on animation projects, including drawing artwork for Chiclets chewing gum commercials.

Tarzan newspaper strip in 1948. His big break came when Burne Hogarth, impressed by Andru's talent, asked him to assist on the
