McClanahan grew up in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where she developed a passion for acting, winning the gold medal in oration and graduating from Ardmore High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in German and theater from the University of Tulsa, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
