Russell Hitchcock is an Australian musician and lead vocalist of the soft rock duo Air Supply, renowned for his soaring vocals and iconic hits like "All Out of Love", "The One That You Love", and "Making Love Out of Nothing at All". With a career spanning over four decades, Hitchcock's distinctive voice has become synonymous with the soft rock genre.
Born on June 15, 1949, in Melbourne, Australia, Hitchcock attended South Brunswick State School and later studied at Princes Hill High School in Carlton North. His early interest in music led him to play the drums and become the lead vocalist in a band called 19th Generation.
In 1965, Hitchcock left school to work as a salesman, but his passion for music persisted. At the age of 20, he obtained a job at a computer company, where he worked for three years before being promoted and transferred to Sydney.
In 1975, Hitchcock met British musician Graham Russell on the set of a production of Jesus Christ Superstar, and Air Supply was born. The duo's unique sound, characterized by Hitchcock's powerful vocals and Russell's songwriting, quickly gained popularity.
Air Supply's breakthrough came in 1976 with their hit single "Love and Other Bruises", followed by a string of chart-topping hits throughout the 1980s, including "Lost in Love", "Here I Am", and "The One That You Love".
After Air Supply took a break in 1987, Hitchcock released several solo singles, followed by his self-titled solo debut album in 1988. In 1990, he released the single "Swear to Your Heart", which featured on the soundtrack of the film Arachnophobia.
In 1995, Hitchcock recorded a duet, "Is It You", with Rita Coolidge for her album Behind the Memories. He continued to release solo material, including the albums Take Time (2009) and Tennessee: The Nashville Sessions (2011).
In 1983, Hitchcock married his wife, Kim, and the couple has two children together. Despite his busy touring and recording schedule, Hitchcock prioritizes his family life and is known for his down-to-earth personality.
Throughout his career, Hitchcock has remained committed to his craft, continuing to tour and record with Air Supply, while also pursuing solo projects. His enduring talent and dedication to his fans have solidified his place as one of the most beloved voices in soft rock.
