Born Raymundo Cipriano Pujante Cayabyab on May 4, 1954, in Santa Cruz, Manila, Cayabyab was the fourth child of Alberto Austria Cayabyab and Celerina Venson Pujante. His mother, an opera singer and professor at the University of the Philippines' UP College of Music, introduced him to music at a tender age of four, starting with piano lessons from music students boarding with his family.
