Early Life and Career

Sadhana Shivdasani, mononymously known as Sadhana, was an Indian actress who left an indelible mark on the Hindi film industry. Born as Anjali Shivdasani on September 2, 1941, in Karachi, British India, she was the only child of her parents Shivram Shivdasani and Lali Devi.

Regarded as one of the finest actresses of Indian cinema, Sadhana was noted for her exquisite beauty, trendsetting fashion statements, and iconic performances in numerous films. Her family migrated to Bombay during the partition of India when she was just 7 years old, setting the stage for her future in the film industry.

Breakthrough and Rise to Fame

Sadhana's career in films began with an uncredited appearance in Raj Kapoor's Shree 420 (1955). However, it was her role in Love In Simla (1960) that catapulted her to stardom. Her distinctive hairstyle in the film became a rage and came to be known as the "Sadhana Cut."

This success was followed by a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including Parakh (1960), Hum Dono (1961), Asli-Naqli (1962), (1962), Mere Mehboob (1963), Woh Kaun Thi (1964), Arzoo (1965), and Waqt (1965). Her performances in these films solidified her position as a leading actress of the 1960s.

The Mystery Girl Era

Sadhana's work with director Raj Khosla in the suspense thriller trilogy, which included Woh Kaun Thi (1964), Mera Saaya (1966), and Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), earned her the moniker "The Mystery Girl." Her enigmatic presence and captivating performances in these films remain etched in the minds of audiences to this day.

Personal Life and Health Issues

In 1966, Sadhana married her Love In Simla director R. K. Nayyar. However, her health began to deteriorate in the latter half of the 1960s due to hyperthyroidism, forcing her to take a brief break from work.

During this time, she underwent treatment in Boston and eventually returned to acting in 1969, starring in two consecutive box-office hits, and Intaqam.

Later Career and Legacy

In 1974, Sadhana made her directorial debut with the crime thriller Geetaa Mera Naam, marking a new chapter in her career. Although she eventually withdrew from acting, her impact on Indian cinema remained unwavering.

Sadhana's final screen appearance was in the delayed release Ulfat Ki Nayi Manzilein (1994). In 2002, she received the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to her enduring legacy in the Indian film industry.

Sadhana Shivdasani passed away on December 25, 2015, leaving behind a treasure trove of iconic performances and a timeless legacy that continues to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.
