Born on October 14, 1977, in Faisalabad, Pakistan, Ajmal's cricketing journey began at the domestic level, representing Faisalabad, Khan Research Laboratories, and Islamabad. His impressive performances in the domestic circuit earned him a spot in the Pakistani national team.
Ajmal made his ODI debut for Pakistan in July 2008 at the age of 30, followed by his Test debut a year later. Despite being reported for a suspect bowling action in 2009, he was cleared and went on to play a pivotal role in Pakistan's victory in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20.
From November 2011 to December 2014, Ajmal held the top spot in the ICC's ODI bowling rankings, becoming the first Pakistani bowler to achieve this feat. He also reached the number one spot in T20Is between October and December 2012, and held the second spot in Test rankings between January and July 2012.
In 2014, Ajmal was banned by the ICC due to an illegal bowling action. He worked with Saqlain Mushtaq to rectify his action, but eventually withdrew from the Pakistani World Cup squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
On November 13, 2017, Ajmal announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He played his final match on November 29, 2017, for Faisalabad against Lahore Whites in the semifinals of the 2017-18 National T20 Cup.
