Lead vocalist and guitarist of the 1960s psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, known for their raw, bluesy sound and hit songs like "Piece of My Heart".
Sam Andrew, an American rock musician, singer, songwriter, composer, and artist, is best known as the founding member and guitarist of the iconic band Big Brother and the Holding Company. With a career spanning over five decades, Andrew left an indelible mark on the music industry, earning three platinum albums and two hit singles.
Born on December 18, 1941, in Taft, California, Andrew was the son of a military father, which led to frequent moves during his childhood. This nomadic lifestyle, however, didn't hinder his passion for music, and he developed his skills at a very early age. By the time he was 17, living in Okinawa, Japan, Andrew had formed his own band, the Cool Notes, and even had his own weekly TV show, an Okinawan version of American Bandstand.
Andrew's early influences were Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and Little Richard, as well as Delta blues. His brother, Leland Andrew, fondly referred to him as the "Benny Goodman of Japan."
After graduating from high school, Andrew's father was transferred to Hamilton Air Force Base in northern California. Andrew began attending classes at the University of San Francisco, where he became involved with the San Francisco folk music scene of the early 1960s. During this time, he met Peter Albin, and together they formed Big Brother and the Holding Company.
Andrew brought many original songs to the band, including "Call on Me" and "Combination of the Two," which became two of Big Brother's most enduring classic tracks. Janis Joplin, recruited by band manager Chet Helms, joined Big Brother as lead singer in 1966, and the band soon landed a record contract, issuing their first album on Mainstream and their second on Columbia Records.
Andrew's contributions to Big Brother and the Holding Company were instrumental in shaping the band's unique sound. He continued to perform and record with the band until his illness in early 2015, serving as the musical director of the band.
Andrew's songs have been featured in numerous major motion picture soundtracks and documentaries, further solidifying his legacy in the music industry. His impact on rock music is undeniable, and his work with Big Brother and the Holding Company remains a testament to his innovative spirit and dedication to his craft.
Sam Andrew passed away on February 12, 2015, leaving behind a rich legacy in the music world. His contributions to Big Brother and the Holding Company continue to inspire new generations of musicians and music enthusiasts alike.
