A talented rugby league forward who played for Australia and New Zealand, known for his rugged style and strong performances in high-pressure games.
Sam McKendry is a former New Zealand Māori and New Zealand international rugby league footballer who played as a prop for the Penrith Panthers in the NRL. With a career spanning over a decade, McKendry's unwavering determination and resilience on the field earned him a reputation as a formidable force in the sport.
Born on 19 July 1989 in Stirling, Western Australia, McKendry is of Māori and Scottish descent. He moved to New Zealand at the age of 8 and was raised in Dargaville. McKendry boarded at Mt Albert Grammar School in Auckland, where he developed his passion for rugby league, playing for the Mt Albert Lions and representing the Junior Kiwis.
McKendry was signed by the Penrith Panthers in 2006, and he quickly made a name for himself in the rugby league community. He played for the Panthers in their 2007 Jersey Flegg Cup Grand Final-winning team against the Parramatta Eels, scoring a try. This marked the beginning of his successful career with the Panthers.
Making his NRL debut for the Panthers in round 10 of the 2008 season, McKendry primarily played in the NYC for the Panthers between 2008 and 2009, totaling 44 matches. He moved into the Panthers' NRL squad in 2010 and established himself as a regular starter.
McKendry's career was not without its challenges. He missed the end of the 2016 season due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injury and the entirety of the 2017 season after reinjuring it during a preseason trial. However, he refused to let his injuries define him, and he returned to the NRL in 2018.
Despite suffering another ACL injury in 2018, McKendry persisted, staying on the field for 13 minutes before the extent of the injury was revealed. His unwavering dedication and perseverance earned him the respect of his peers and fans alike.
On 16 September 2019, it was announced that McKendry would be released by the Penrith Panthers at the end of the season. On 29 November 2019, he took to Instagram to announce his retirement as a player from the NRL.
In his heartfelt post, McKendry reflected on his 13-year journey with the Panthers, saying, "I've spent the last 13 years with Penrith doing what I love as a job and got to live out my dream. My career didn't end as I planned due to consecutive ACL injuries, but I never let injury force me into medical retirement and fought back each time to retire on my own terms."
Sam McKendry's story serves as a testament to the power of resilience and determination. Despite the setbacks and challenges he faced, he remained committed to his craft, earning him a place as one of the most respected prop forwards in New Zealand rugby league history.
