Santi White, aka Santigold, was born on September 25, 1976, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She attended Germantown Friends School and later majored in music and African-American studies at Wesleyan University.
In the 1990s, Santigold adopted her pseudonym after a friend gave it to her as a nickname. Before embarking on a solo career, she worked as an A&R representative for Epic Records and even co-wrote and executive produced Ress's debut album, How I Do. She was also the lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock band Stiffed, releasing the EP Sex Sells in 2003 and the album Burned Again in 2005.
Santigold's self-titled debut album, Santogold, dropped in 2008 to widespread critical acclaim. The album's second single, "L.E.S. Artistes," reached the top 40 in the UK Singles Chart, solidifying her position as a rising star. Her sophomore effort, Master of My Make-Believe, peaked at number one on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart, featuring her highest-charting single to date, "Disparate Youth."
Santigold has collaborated with a laundry list of esteemed artists, including Beastie Boys, JAY-Z, Kanye West, David Byrne, Mark Ronson, Karen O, ASAP Rocky, and Diplo. Her genre-hopping style has led to a diverse range of collaborations, from hip-hop to indie rock and beyond.
Santigold's innovative style has earned her numerous awards and nominations, including Best Breakthrough Artist at the 2008 NME Awards and the Vanguard Award at the 2009 ASCAP Awards. Her fourth studio album, Spirituals, released in 2022, received favorable reviews, with The Guardian describing it as "a whirlwind album full of feeling and fervour."
Santigold's music often explores themes of individuality, empowerment, and social commentary. Her lyrics are infused with a sense of activism, encouraging listeners to challenge the status quo and embrace their unique identities.
Despite her busy schedule, Santigold has prioritized her personal life, taking time to focus on her relationships and creative endeavors. Her supersocial personality has led to her being dubbed a "connector of people," a trait that has helped her build a devoted fan base.
