In 2005, Carelli was signed by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling, WWE's farm territory. He made his debut on Raw during a live episode from Milan, Italy, where he, as Santino Marella, won the Intercontinental Championship from Umaga in his first match.
