She attended international schools, nurturing her dream to pursue studies in the U.S. and combine athletics with academics at a world-class level.
Sara's swimming career took off when she competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens at just 16 years old, becoming the youngest member of the Slovenian Olympic Team. She went on to win two European Junior Champion titles in Lisbon in 2004, followed by two silver medals at the Mediterranean Games in Almeria, Spain, in 2005.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics marked Sara's crowning achievement, as she clinched the silver medal in the 200m freestyle event with a record-breaking time of 1:54.97. This feat not only earned her Slovenia's first-ever Olympic medal in swimming but also made her the second woman in history to break the 1 minute 55 seconds mark, behind only Federica Pellegrini.
Following her Olympic success, Sara moved to Berkeley, California, to attend the University of California, Berkeley, where she represented the Cal Women's swim team under the leadership of Teri McKeever. During her four years as a student-athlete, she won three National Team Titles and individually won the 100m butterfly at the NCAA Championships in her senior year.
