Sébastien Bordeleau is a Canadian-born French former professional ice hockey forward who made a name for himself in the National Hockey League. Born on February 15, 1975, Bordeleau is perhaps best known for his versatility on the ice, playing for several teams including the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues, Minnesota Wild, and Phoenix Coyotes.
Bordeleau was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, while his father, Paulin Bordeleau, played for the Canucks. Growing up, he spent several years in France, where his father played professional hockey. As a youth, Bordeleau participated in the 1987 Quebec International PeeWee Hockey Tournament with a team from France and in the 1989 tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Lanaudière.
After returning to Canada, Bordeleau spent four years with the Hull Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). During his junior career, he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the third round, 73rd overall, in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.
Bordeleau's most productive year came in 1994-1995, when he notched 52 goals. During his first three pro seasons, he played intermittently with Montreal, splitting his time with the American Hockey League's (AHL) Fredericton Canadiens. In the summer of 1998, Bordeleau was traded to the expansion Nashville Predators.
With the Predators, Bordeleau scored 16 goals and 40 points in the team's inaugural season, making him one of its top penalty killers. He continued in the same role the next season but saw less playing time in 2000-2001. Bordeleau was claimed on waivers by the St. Louis Blues in the latter stages of the 2000-2001 season and played limited games with the club's AHL affiliate in Worcester.
In 2001, Bordeleau was claimed in the Waiver Draft by the Minnesota Wild and went on to split his time between the parent club and their AHL affiliate in Houston. He was later dealt to the Phoenix Coyotes prior to the midpoint of the season.
After competing for the Coyotes, Bordeleau opted to head overseas for the 2002-2003 season. His decision marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career, one that would take him to new heights and new challenges.
