Scotch Taylor was a South African sportsman who made a name for himself in the world of cricket and hockey, captaining the Transvaal cricket team for four seasons and representing South Africa in one cricket Test in 1956.
Born on 25 July 1925 in Johannesburg, Taylor was an alumnus of the prestigious King Edward VII School. His educational background laid the foundation for his future success in sports.
Taylor was a top-order batsman who made his Currie Cup debut as an opener against Rhodesia in 1950-51. He scored his first century in the next match, adding 204 for the first wicket with South Africa Test veteran Eric Rowan.
In the 1950-51 season, Taylor's team, Transvaal, won the Currie Cup, with Taylor finishing tenth in the Currie Cup runs tally. He continued to perform well, scoring 164 in an innings win over Border, where he added 274 with Rowan for the first wicket.
Taylor's bowling skills were also utilized, and he took 10 wickets at a bowling average of 32.30 in the season. Although he faced some setbacks, including being dropped from the team, he continued to play cricket at the top level.
In addition to his cricketing prowess, Taylor was a skilled hockey player who represented Transvaal in the sport. He was elected president of the South African Hockey Union, a testament to his leadership skills and dedication to the sport.
