Drummer for The Stooges, a pioneering punk rock band, known for his raw, primitive, and energetic drumming style that helped shape the sound of punk rock.
Scott Asheton, born on August 16, 1949, was an American musician and drummer, best known for his work with the rock band the Stooges, a pioneering group in the punk rock movement. Asheton's primitive drumming style and energetic performances laid the foundation for many punk bands to come.
In 1967, Asheton co-founded the Stooges along with his older brother Ron Asheton, Iggy Pop, and Dave Alexander. The band's original incarnation released two LPs on Elektra Records, featuring Asheton's raw and energetic drumming. The Stooges' sound was a departure from the glam rock and psychedelic rock of the time, and their music would go on to influence countless punk bands.
In the 1970s, following the Stooges' initial breakup, Asheton played with his brother Ron in various bands, including the Scott Morgan Band, Scots Pirates, and most notably Sonics Rendezvous Band. He also recorded extensively with Sonny Vincent, playing drums on four full studio albums, as well as making special guest appearances on other Vincent releases.
In 2003, the Stooges reformed, with Asheton being the only consistent member alongside Iggy Pop after the death of his brother Ron in 2009. The band released a fourth album in 2007 and remained active until 2016. Asheton also worked with guitarist James Williamson following his brother's passing.
Scott Asheton's drumming style and energetic performances had a profound impact on the punk rock movement. His work with the Stooges influenced bands such as The Ramones, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols, among many others. Asheton's legacy extends beyond his music, with his raw, unbridled energy inspiring generations of musicians.
Asheton retired from live performances in 2011, due to health issues, and was replaced by Larry Mullins. He passed away on March 15, 2014, at the age of 64, due to a heart attack. Asheton is survived by his daughter, Leanna Asheton, and his wife, Eli.
Asheton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 as a member of the Stooges.
Scott Asheton's pioneering drumming style and energetic performances left an indelible mark on the punk rock movement. His legacy continues to inspire musicians to this day, ensuring his place in rock 'n' roll history.
